Saree care
A silk or zari saree lasts for years with a little care. This is general advice; for a particular piece, ask us.
Cleaning
- Dry clean silk and zari sarees. Washing at home can dull silk and damage zari.
- If you spill something, take the saree to a dry cleaner soon, and do not rub the stain.
- Air the saree for a few hours after wearing it, before you put it away.
Storing
- Wrap each saree in a soft cotton or muslin cloth. Plastic traps moisture.
- Refold along different lines every few months, so the folds do not set into creases.
- Keep sarees in a cool, dry, dark place, away from direct sunlight.
Looking after zari
- Zari is metallic thread, and moisture and perfume can tarnish it.
- Put on perfume before you drape the saree, not on the saree itself.
- Store zari sarees wrapped on their own, so the zari does not rub against other pieces.
Ironing
- Iron silk on a low heat, on the reverse side.
- Lay a cotton cloth between the iron and the saree, and do not press the iron straight onto zari.
